TEACHER OF THE YEAR GUIDELINES

Message from the Awards & Recognition Committee Chair, Roma Jean Bradburn to the State Affiliate Presidents:

To: AAFCS Affiliate Presidents.
From: Roma Jean Bradburn, Awards and Recognition Committee Chair 2014-2015
Date: June 7, 2014
Re: Revision of forms and simplification of T.O.Y. nomination process for 2015.

I am pleased to announce to you that the Teacher of the Year nomination forms have been reworked and the process simplified for the 2015 awards year. The Awards and Recognition committee and former T.O.Y.'s have worked the past several weeks to produce this document that you will under guidelines at the end of this message. It is available to use at your affiliate level for your 2015 nominee and to encourage others to submit their nominations each year.

Please publicize within your affiliate that the ESAE Community provides additional monetary incentives to the AAFCS Affiliate nominees and the Merit Winners. The ESAE Community will award each Merit finalist $250 for attending the national conference and participating in the ESAE Curriculum Showcase. The other affiliate nominees, who attend the national conference and participate in the ESAE curriculum showcase, will receive $100.

Please inform your affiliate members that significant changes have been made and encourage your members to apply to become your Teacher of the Year who then will become a nominee for the AAFCS T.O.Y. Each affiliate should be represented in this competition.

Significant changes made include:
1. The deadline date has been changed to the second Monday of January in each year. January 12, 2015 is the deadline for 2015.
2. To encourage more participation, the award has been opened up to full time permanent FCS Teachers who have retired within twelve months of the AAFCS National Nomination deadline.
3. The terminology has been changed to refer to FCS curriculum Focus which broadens the focus areas. See Five Steps: Number three.
4. Categories have been combined to reduce the number of pages submitted from 23 to 15. The total number of fifteen pages to be submitted include:
• The completed online nomination form.
• Vita-two pages including specific information pertaining to the curriculum focus.
• FCS Curriculum Focus-eight pages maximum. This includes the description, school/community setting, goals and outcomes, impact statements, funding challenges and photographs/drawings, figures/tables, and media clippings et al., which illustrate and further explain the curriculum focus. Note: What used to be a separate five page appendix has been combined with the body of the nomination, thus only key items would be included. Note: This number of pages requires the nominee to write succinctly and to include only vital information.
• Four letters of support.
• An attached photo.
5. The scorecard has been revised to reflect 100 points. Credentials remain at five points but, FCS related sponsorships have been combined with the category of Nominee shows an exemplary level of professional commitment to FCS.

PUBLIC POLILCY AWARDS

Chalkley-Fenn Public Policy Visiting Scholar Award

The Chalkley-Fenn Public Policy Visiting Scholar Award was established in 1990 to honor Gladys Branegan Chalkley, president and treasurer of AAFCS from 1940-1942. Dr. Chalkley founded the Montana Affiliate of AAFCS, as well as the state's dietetic association and its chapter of the American Association of University Women. The scholarship is also funded by a gift from the estate of Geraldine G. Fenn, a South Dakota native who was an Extension 4-H Specialist in Montana. After retirement, Fenn spearheaded development of the Montana 4-H Foundation for Montana and served as a youth advocate at state and national levels. Today, it is supported by donations from AAFCS members who believe in public policy and the utility of civic engagement.

The Chalkley-Fenn Award program is designed to stimulate interest in public policy as it affects the family and consumer sciences profession, educate scholars in various aspects of policymaking, and provide interaction with members of Congress and leaders of various family and consumer sciences-related organizations.
■Deadline for receipt of nomination materials for the Chalkley-Fenn Public Policy Visiting Scholar Award is the second Monday of January.
■The description, guidelines, and application below should be consulted for details.
