About the Session:

The topic of diversity is very timely given recent events in our country. Family and Consumer Science professionals in their work are likely to face situations where being informed about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) would be helpful to them and their constituents. With so many falsehoods being spread and so much divisiveness, it is hard to be self-reflective and to distinguish fact from emotion and unfounded opinion. We cannot understand the present until we know about how we got where we are and where we should be in the future. People judge when they do not understand. FCS professionals should be advocates for the deepest meaning of our mission.

Objectives:

Participants will:
  • Explore the history of the Association related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Recognize the contribution of communities of color to the profession.
  • Examine personal conscious and unconscious predispositions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Identify principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion that are applicable in their professional setting.
  • Utilize practical steps to implement principles in their professional settings.
  • Begin a dialogue about ways the Association can improve its policies, procedures, and opportunities for members to participate in change.
