Family and consumer sciences professionals play a vital role in addressing issues of individual and family well-being and environmental sustainability, yet the profession itself faces challenges of sustainability.  This panel of international leaders brings global and local perspectives to the discussion of what contributes to sustainable academic programs and opportunities for professional practice.  The United Nations Millennium Development goals provide a framework for identifying the most critical issues for family sustainability in “developing” countries, but there are changes in the economies and environments of “developed” countries that also call for the expertise of family and consumer sciences professionals.  With inspiration from the past and vision for the future, the panel illustrates the vitality of family and consumer sciences in the 21st century.
