Student Unit (SU) Sessions

The AAFCS Student Unit (SU) has designed activities especially for graduate and undergraduate students.  On Thursday, help collect prescription or non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses for Recycle for Sight, a program sponsored by Lions Club International.  Then network with students and the National Student Officer Team while enjoying fun and relaxing activities during the SU Social Night. On Friday, attend the SU business meeting where you’ll hear updates on SU events and accomplishments of the past year, receive information about opportunities for involvement, and assist with goal setting for the next fiscal year.  The SU will induct new officers and recognize SU award recipients and scholarship winners. And, be sure to get a Betty Lamp temporary tattoo, which is being sold by the SU to make a meaningful contribution to the Centennial Challenge Campaign!

AAFCS Leadership Sessions

Collaborate with colleagues and launch plans for the second century of AAFCS during leadership sessions.  Most governance sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 2009.  Higher education meetings will take place Wednesday morning, followed by committee meetings in the afternoon and the Council for Certification business meeting in the evening.  The Affiliate Presidents Unit will meet Wednesday evening and Saturday morning.  On Thursday, June 25, 2009, meet with members of your AAFCS Community or Communities.  If you’re an AAFCS member and haven’t yet joined a Community, come to learn more and join a Community on the spot!

Other Events of Interest

In addition to educational sessions and keynote addresses, the Annual Conference offers a variety of ways to advance your professional development.  Learn how to apply for awards, grants, fellowships, and scholarships, get published in the Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal, evaluate public policy implications of sustainability issues, incorporate innovative curriculum ideas, and more!

AAFCS Competency Exams

Friday, June 26, 1:30pm – 5:00pm

Whether you are a new professional or seasoned veteran, validate your professional expertise through the AAFCS competency examination system.  These national competency exams also meet a major requirement for obtaining corresponding Certified in Family and Consumer Sciences (CFCS) professional certifications.  As a registered conference participant, you can sit for one of three exams, each corresponding to one of the three certifications.  Email fcstests@aafcs.org to request exam procedures.  Receive a special price when you register for the test by June 1, 2009!  Test registrations received after June 1 (including on-site) will be limited to space available.

AAFCS Stars Reception

Friday, June 26, 5:30pm – 6:30pm

Special reception by invitation only.  AAFCS will recognize its top donors; Legacy Society, Gold Legacy Society, and 50-year members; and Friend of the Family Award, 21st Century Community Champion Award, National Teacher of the Year Award, New Achievers Award, and Leaders Award recipients.

Centennial Pacesetter Dinner

Friday, June 26, 7:30pm – 9:30pm

In honor of the AAFCS Centennial Celebration, the 2009 Annual Conference program will include an elegant Centennial Pacesetter Dinner.  Enjoy a fabulous meal while networking with colleagues and recognizing 50-year members, 2009 Leaders and New Achievers, and past Distinguished Service Awardees, Leaders, and New Achievers.  You will also hear a special presentation from AAFCS member Joyce Miles, CFCS, Retired, Ellen Richards historian, on what FCS professionals have accomplished and what challenges they must address in the next 100 years.  Tickets may be purchased for $60 each.

Centennial Reunions

Saturday, June 27, 4:30pm - 5:30pm

For the celebration of AAFCS’ 100th anniversary, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy light refreshments while connecting with former students, colleagues, and alumni at the Centennial Reunions.  Whether it’s been several decades or just a short time since you’ve seen someone, it’s always good to catch up on work and family and remember the special times you had working together.  For college and university programs, it’s a great chance to recruit graduate students, share the wonderful things taking place in your program, and honor outstanding graduates who have been leaders in AAFCS and their professional settings.

Centennial Celebration: Light for a New Century

Saturday, June 27, 7:00pm – 9:30pm (program begins at 7:30pm)

Ticket included in each Full and Saturday-Only Registration! The Tennessee Affiliate will be hosting a fun and memorable Centennial Celebration on Saturday evening.  Reminisce with colleagues and friends while enjoying light refreshments and festive music.  Have a commemorative photo taken alone or with colleagues, honor current and past Student Unit leaders, and see glimpses of the future from our Tennessee students and 2009-10 AAFCS president.  The evening will culminate in an exciting display, as would be expected for a 100th anniversary celebration!  Take home a commemorative Centennial gift to remember this momentous occasion.  Semi-formal attire is suggested, but not required.
