AAFCS Celebrates 100 Years of
Providing Life Skills on World FCS Day

(Alexandria, Va. – March 20, 2008) – On March 21, 2008, the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) and the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) will recognize World Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Day as they begin to celebrate their 100-year anniversaries.  The theme for World FCS Day, “Home Economics Supporting Sustainable Development and Quality of Life for All,” is carried out by thousands of AAFCS members, who provide critical life skills education to individuals, families, and communities.

For more than a century, FCS professionals have been developing, integrating, and providing life skills education and research in the areas of housing and environment; personal finance; child care and parenting; apparel and textiles; and dietetics and nutrition.  In the U.S., life skills are taught primarily by elementary, secondary, and post-secondary educators, Cooperative Extension educators, and professionals in business, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations.  In countries around the world, FCS professionals are working to address major societal issues, such as how to conserve natural resources and reduce obesity rates.

“With an increased focus on sustainable living, children and adults can learn how to reduce their carbon footprints by taking family and consumer sciences classes offered in secondary schools, universities, and Cooperative Extension programs,” said Carolyn W. Jackson, CFCS, AAFCS executive director.

About AAFCS
