Miles Receives AAFCS
Distinguished Service Award
(Alexandria, Va. - July 11, 2008) — C. Sue Miles, Ph.D., retired human development faculty and administrator, Cornell and West Virginia Universities, was honored with the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences’ (AAFCS) most prestigious national award, the AAFCS Distinguished Service Award, at its recent 99th Annual Conference & Expo in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Miles realized very early in her family and consumer sciences (FCS) career that one of the greatest contributions she could make in her profession was to help seed an informed citizenry through research and public policy education. The purpose was the same, whether it was working with families whose homes were sinking into played out coal mines, establishing the need and finally an office of consumer affairs in West Virginia, or addressing the health needs of families and successfully seeking funding for an improved delivery of healthcare in New York state. Her goal has been to support families and those working with them to find the information they need and to learn how to use that information to seek solutions to redress those issues.
A 40-year AAFCS member, Miles has served in many appointed and elected roles at the local, state, and national levels in both New York and West Virginia. In New York, she served as a district president, newsletter editor, and chair of the Legislative, Resolutions, International and Public Policy Committees. In West Virginia, she is currently completing a third term as affiliate president. At the national level, Miles chaired the Resolutions and the Nominations Committees as well as the Extension Section; she played a key role in leading the successful drive to fund the Extension 2000 Campaign.
Following retirement, Miles continues to develop educational resources and mentor others in public policy education and family development. She has provided leadership for a partnership between the Stewartstown/Morgantown West Virginia area and a community in the United Kingdom to address some of the desperate needs of orphanages in and near Kampala, Uganda.
The other AAFCS 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipients are:
Janett Gibbs, retired family resource management specialist, former home economist, and former University of Georgia home economics instructor
