White Receives AAFCS
Distinguished Service Award
(Alexandria, Va. - July 14, 2008) — Lynn B. White, professor and family economics specialist emerita, Texas Agrilife Extension, The Texas A&M University, was honored with the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences’ (AAFCS) most prestigious national award, the AAFCS Distinguished Service Award, at its recent 99th Annual Conference & Expo in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
After graduating from Texas Tech University with a B.S. and M.S. degree in home economics education, White began her career as a high school homemaking teacher in Clarendon, Texas. In 1972, she began what became a 30-year career with Texas Agrilife Extension. Throughout her career as an Extension professional, White enthusiastically applied her expertise in family economics and skills in program development toward improving the lives of individuals and families in Texas and throughout the United States. She was a founding member and served on the Board for the Texas Rural Leadership Program, and a task force she led on welfare reform resulted in the program “Building Self-Sufficient Families,” a program that is still used statewide.
White’s service to the Texas Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (TAFCS) is
equally long-standing; she has served in multiple leadership positions at the affiliate level. Her service to the Public Policy Committee has resulted in a higher visibility of the profession in the public policy arena, and she persistently models use of the National Issues Forum to engage citizens in all walks of life in deliberation about policy issues.
The other AAFCS 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipients are:
Janett Gibbs, retired family resource management specialist, former home economist, former University of Georgia home economics instructor, and former Carson-Newman College assistant professor
C. Sue Miles, retired human development faculty and administrator, Cornell and West Virginia Universities
