2006 Recipient
Deborah Gentry, CFCS, AAFCS Public Policy Co-chair and Chair, Associate Dean and Professor, Illinois State University
The primary focus of Deborah’s recent visiting scholar experiences has been the deliberative process and its applications for issues related to financial literacy, education and security. A guide to assist members in efforts to conduct deliberative forums on these issues resulted. She also investigated the use of Audience Response Systems technology to facilitate deliberative forums.

2000 Recipient
Bonnie Braun, CFCS, AAFCS Public Policy Committee Chair, Associate Professor, University of Maryland
Bonnie focused her internship on developing tools for policy analysis that could be used by members in understanding and communicating effects of policy on families. She also prepared numerous statements in response to pending federal legislation. Her experience as a visiting scholar was put to use during the five years she's served on the AAFCS Public Policy Committee, including three years as the chair.

1999 Recipient
Sue E. Williams, AAFCS Vice President, Planning, Associate Professor, Oklahoma State University
Sue concentrated her efforts on 21st Century Community Learning Center legislation and informing federal decision makers.

1998 Recipient
Martin Coppack, past AAFCS member, lives in England
During his tenure as public policy scholar, Martin worked on a number of legislative issues. The most time sensitive initiative was the reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act. He collaborated with other professional associations to write letters to members of Congress, communicate with Congressional staff, monitor legislative changes, and keep AAFCS members informed through updates and alerts. The Act was passed and signed by President Clinton on October 31, 1998. He also worked to ensure that AAFCS’ position was represented during legislative discussions on the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, hate crimes, juvenile crimes, and health care coverage.

1996 Recipient
Connie J. Ley, CFCS, Retired AAFCS Member, Professor, Illinois State University
Connie completed the Association's Public Policy Manual, which was published in 1997. She also helped with organizing the Public Policy Leadership Conference, which was held annually in D.C. for association members. In addition, Connie worked on legislation via collaborative groups on topics such as the extension of the family leave legislation, children's health care legislation, and parental involvement in education. She also wrote several articles and book chapters based on her internship experience.

1995 Recipient
Frances T. Griffith, CFCS, former AAFCS member, Former Director of Development, Produce for Better Health Foundation
During her internship at AAFCS headquarters, Frances monitored the major changes Congress made to the welfare system. She also conducted a survey on family policy by sending a questionnaire to various stakeholders. Her findings were published in political science journals.

1994 Recipient
Marilyn J. Bruin, former AAFCS member, Associate Professor, University of Minnesota Marilyn worked on the Association’s Public Policy Manual, observed welfare reform hearings, and met with Congressional staff members.

1993 Recipient
Maxine Lewis Rowley, CFCS, AAFCS Member, Consultant, State Offices of Education, Retired Professor, Brigham Young University
Maxine spent most of her time as the public policy scholar outlining, writing, and formatting the Association’s Public Policy Manual. She also collaborated with the Children’s Defense Fund and National Association for the Education of Young Children to advocate for reauthorizing the funding of Head Start programs, eliminating child abuse in child care settings, and reducing the high school drop-out rate for African American men.
