STORY IDEAS

The 100th Annual Conference & Expo, sponsored by the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences, will take place at the Knoxville Convention Center and Hilton Knoxville in Knoxville, Tenn., June 25- 27, 2009.

Celebrating the Past, Sustaining the Future, the conference theme, will cover a variety of topics, from "going green" in the classroom to fashion counterfeit. This story might be of interest to your audience as a general interest piece.

For media interested in K-12 or education issues, AAFCS will be honoring its 2009 Teachers of the Year during the Opening General Session. The AAFCS 2009 National Teacher of the Year, Susan M. Turgeson, CFCS, will be available for interviews.

FCS teachers include these topics in their classes:

  • Financial Literacy and Smart Consumer Skills
  • Healthy Lifestyles and Nutrition
  • Responsible Parenting and Childcare
  • Safe Personal Environment
  • Nonviolent Conflict Resolution
  • Good Citizenship and Service Learning
  • Career Exploration and Preparation

In local youth and human interest news, Traci Jarrett, vice chair of outreach and service for the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) Student Unit (SU), and the other SU national officers are leading two service projects: "Keep Knoxville Beautiful" to clean up areas around the conference venue and "Recycle for Sight" to collect used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses to donate to the Knox County North Lions Club.
