Mentoring and Networking Program

The Student Unit members of the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences are the future leaders of the FCS profession and the organization. The AAFCS Mentoring and Networking Program is available to provide students with guidance, advice, and support in choosing career pathways, developing professional skills, and starting out in their first positions in the field. Through this program, students will have an opportunity to take advantage of the wisdom and rich experience of accomplished professionals.

How to get involved as a student:

  1. Download the Mentoring and Networking Program List. Read through the profiles of professionals in your area(s) of interest and select individuals to contact.
  2. Register yourself as a protegé by completing the Mentoring and Networking Program Application and submitting it to the Student Unit Secretary.
  3. When contacting your mentor, introduce yourself, thank them for their willingness to participate in the program, and begin discussing your goals and ideas for the mentoring experience.
  4. We highly encourage you to complete the FREE online course: Self-Managed Mentoring at www.kon.org/Mentoring. Self-Managed Mentoring is the philosophy upon which this network is based. It is up to YOU to make the most of your experience.
  5. Consider meeting your mentor(s) face-to-face at the AAFCS Annual Conference!
  6. Please participate in any evaluation/questionnaire that may be administered throughout the year. This will help AAFCS make the Mentoring and Networking Program the best experience it can be.
