Dr. Jennifer Paff Ogle and Dr. Sung-Jin Lee Receive Scholarship Awards from the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences

Alexandria, Va. – July 17, 2018 – Jennifer Paff Ogle, Ph.D, and her three co-authors have received this year’s award for Outstanding Scholarship Article in the Journal of Family & Consumer Sciences (JFCS).  Sung-Jin Lee, Ph.D., and her four co-authors received Honorable Mention. The JFCS is a quarterly, peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). Both awards were announced at the AAFCS 109th Annual Conference & Expo in Atlanta, Ga.

The Outstanding Scholarship Article award recognizes one scholarly article from 2017 issues that meets the highest criteria for scholarship and writing as determined by the 7-member JFCS editorial board. The winning article, “Building Middle School Girls’ Self-Efficacy, Knowledge, and Interest in Math and Science Through the Integration of Fashion and STEM” by lead author Jennifer Paff Ogle, Ph.D., a professor at Colorado State University, and her co-authors Karen H. Hyllegard, Ph.D., Karen Rambo-Hernandez, Ph.D., and Juyeon Park, Ph.D., explored a study on whether participation in a fashion-related STEM enrichment program enhanced girls’ performance and interest in math and science. Dr. Ogle, Dr. Hyllegard, and Dr. Park are at Colorado State Universtiy; Dr. Rambo-Hernandez is at West Virginia University.

Honorable Mention in the same category was awarded to Sung-Jin Lee, Ph.D. (lead author), and her four co-authors, Kathleen R. Parrott, Ph.D., Valerie L. Giddings, Ph.D., Sheryl Renee Robinson, and Gene Brown. Their article, “The Influence of Home Modifications on Aging in Place for North Carolina Low-Income Elderly Homeowners,” reported on a study (funded by USDA NIFA) that examined the influence of home modifications on successful aging in place for a sample of North Carolina low-income elderly homeowners. Lee is an associate professor of Housing Research in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, in Greensboro, N.C. Giddings and Robinson are also at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University; Parrott is at Virginia Tech; Brown is at Community Housing Solutions in Greensboro, N.C. The article appeared in Vol. 109, 4 (2017) issue of the JFCS.
