— The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) honored its Leader Award recipients at a ceremony during the 109th Annual Conference & Expo in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 26, 2018.  Among those selected for the prestigious award is Marilyn Swiontek, CFCS-Retired, Pewaukee, Wisconsin.

Established at the association’s 75th anniversary observance in 1984, the AAFCS Leader Award honors family and consumer sciences professionals who have made significant contributions to the profession through their national leadership in AAFCS.

“[Swiontek] is unwavering in her support of family and consumer sciences and more significantly in her tremendous support, concern, and advocacy for all students,” said Wisconsin Association of Family and Consumer Sciences President Carol Subera.

Following 33 years of teaching family and consumer sciences in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marilyn Swiontek currently volunteers at the Community Learning Center at South Division High School where she mentors and invests in students. Also within FCCLA, she has advised over 30 regional, state, and national officers; served as the Wisconsin Region 7 STAR Events Coordinator; volunteered at the Wisconsin FCCLA State Leadership Conference since 2002; and more.

With over 50 years of involvement in AAFCS, Swiontek has proven herself to be a leader in the organization by serving as the Wisconsin Affiliate vice president for external relations and actively involving herself at the state and national level. She is also a member of five other professional organizations related to family and consumer sciences and education and contributes to the field’s knowledge base through her work with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the Career and Technical Student Organization Action Research Team in Education and Work Leadership Program, and more.
