The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences is proud to announce the completion of the Body of Knowledge (BOK) re-tooling process. This completes the work started in 2023 and updated following the 2025 AAFCS Annual Conference. Members of the FCS Body of Knowledge Re-tooling Task Force, along with the AAFCS Board and staff, listened to stakeholders and have integrated additional updates to the FCS-BOK Framework documents and resources. These changes address the requests for additional materials that were made during and after the annual conference in June.

New resources have been added to the Body of Knowledge informational web page. This includes an updated “Foundational Frameworkand a historical timeline for the Body of Knowledge. Additionally, the website includes an article written by members of the Body of Knowledge Task Force that focuses on the re-tooling process. The article, Introduction to the “Re-Tooled” Family and Consumer Sciences Body of Knowledge (FCS-BOK)” will be published in the next issue of the Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences (JFCS) and has been made available to the public to advance the community’s understanding of the FCS-BOK framework.

Lastly, public statements have been published from the following:

When asked for her thoughts on this momentous occasion, Karin Athanas, Executive Director of the AAFCS, had this to share “A voluntary standards process requires the input and feedback of all stakeholders to develop a robust document that will not only capture the views of the community but considers the future needs of users. The updated FCS Body of Knowledge framework was developed by a collection of experts in their field, who tirelessly volunteered their time to give back to the Family and Consumer Sciences, and they’ve succeeded in providing a document that will ensure the success of our discipline and industry into the future.”

Next steps for the FCS Body of Knowledge include the development of additional resources with the help of FCS professionals. This will include instructional materials, presentations, fact sheets, correlations to national standards, integrations of critical science, case study applications, published research, and much more. AAFCS invites contributions during the resource development phase to continue our collective work to advance the field and improve professional practice.
