Family and Consumer Sciences Building the Bridge in Meeting Social Emotional Needs Creating a Trauma Informed Early Childhood Program

Come explore the current research about trauma and social emotional health and its impact on young children and families. This session will provide Family and Consumer Science  Educators an understanding of trauma with strategies that can build a bridge to better outcomes for our youngest learners across the life span.

3.2 Equitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protection Equipment, commonly referred to as PPE is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. PPE is a main source of protection for emergency and recovery workers. Most current designs for PPE do not consider diverse body shapes, sizes or how gender differences affect proportions and clothing fit. This presentation will offer conceptual knowledge of PPE selection; use for individuals with specific work needs, cultural or religious beliefs/practices. Use or acceptability challenges arising from gender norming assumptions will also be considered.

3.4 Five Best Practices for Leadership in AAFCS and Professional Settings

Leadership is the key to professional and organizational growth. Kouzes and Posner (2012, 2017) tested and proposed five best practices to enable leaders to make extraordinary things happen. These five practices have been foundational to the highly successful ten-year experience of the AAFCS Leadership Academy in developing the talents of emerging AAFCS leaders. This session will share Kouzes and Posner's five practices for all AAFCS members to use to develop their leadership potential.

3.5 Becoming a History Detective:  Conducting Historical Research Using Documentary Resources

Historical research requires a detective mindset. Asking questions, searching for clues, discovering uncharted paths, hitting dead ends, discovering hidden leads, and pursuing every trace of information are critical aspects of historical research.  Often, documents are the only evidence available to historical researchers, but they can yield a treasure trove of information if one knows how and where to look.  This session will focus on using documentary resources to uncover FCS history.

3.6 AAFCS Accreditation:  Preparing a Self-Study Report - Standard 1

Higher education Units seeking AAFCS accreditation are required to complete a Self-Study Report addressing four standards for accreditation. Standard 1 addresses the institutional environment in which the Unit is housed. Key areas explored include: the Unit mission, the Unit governance, and the Unit resources. This workshop will explore each of the criteria of this standard as well as the accompanying assessment requirements.
