AAFCS Executive Director Announcement

By AAFCS Team posted 06-28-2023 04:26 PM

I have great news to share with you.  After an extensive national search by the AAFCS Board of Directors and Search Committee, we are pleased to announce that Karin Athanas has accepted the position of Executive Director, effective August 22, 2023.

The Board made the final decision based on Karin’s professional experience with strategic planning, accreditation and certification, managing organization financials, personable nature and desire to work with a non-profit professional organization. Karin’s academic degrees are in biology and forensic science. Similar to our founder, Ellen Richards, Karin’s scientific mind will support the continued growth and success of AAFCS by analyzing our needs, developing action steps to accomplish the priorities of the strategic plan, and collaborating with the staff to carry out our mission and vision.

As we noted in the announcement for this position, Karin will work in partnership with the Board of Directors to reimagine the future of the association in realizing its vision and strategic goals.

Karin Athanas is a standards and conformity assessment expert and nonprofit leader with over a decade of experience working with industry and government agencies on issues of conformance, quality, and reliability.

Prior to joining AAFCS, Karin served as the Executive Director of the TIC Council Americas, the US branch of the TIC Council, where she led member engagement and advocacy programs and served as a spokesperson for the testing, inspection, and certification (“TIC”) industry.

Karin continues to support communities and nonprofits through promotion of product safety and the development of global standards in her roles as Board member of the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization (ICPHSO), member of the ISO Technical Committee (TC) 272 on Forensic Sciences, and U.S. mirror group co-chair of the Joint Strategic Advisory Group (JSAG) on gender responsive standards.

Karin noted, “I am honored to be joining this prestigious organization and am looking forward to engaging with members of this community and advancing the work of family and consumer sciences.”

I am grateful to the search committee, VSTI, and board members for their assistance and support through this process.

Please join us in congratulating and supporting Karin in her new role as AAFCS Executive Director.
