From December 12–23, 2025, the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) at Morgan State University led a transformative study abroad program in India, offering students an immersive learning experience beyond the classroom. The program was led by Dr. Geetika Jaiswal, Assistant Professor in the FACS department, in collaboration with Dr. Jacqueline Holland, FACS Department Chair.
Designed to integrate academic learning with cultural immersion, the program provided students with firsthand exposure to India’s diverse cultural, historical, design, culinary, architectural, and social landscapes. Students traveled to Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and New Delhi, engaging with local communities while examining the intersections of culture, design, architecture, history, and global systems.
A central component of the experience was hands-on, experiential learning through workshops in traditional textile printing, jewelry making, and pottery. These activities connected course concepts to India’s rich craft traditions and highlighted themes of sustainability, heritage preservation, and artisanal practice. Students also visited iconic landmarks, including the Taj Mahal, gaining insight into India’s architectural legacy and regional diversity.
Beyond formal workshops and site visits, students explored local markets, sampled regional cuisines, visited a school for children with special needs, and engaged with both urban and rural communities. These encounters encouraged reflection on global citizenship, ethical engagement, and cross-cultural communication.
Overall, the program emphasized the value of experiential learning in fostering cultural empathy, global awareness, and critical thinking, while reinforcing Morgan State University’s commitment to preparing students to engage thoughtfully with an interconnected world.
