Wellness Wednesday:  Personal Finance Education

With April designated as Financial Literacy Month, there has been ample news coverage on personal finance education. How does your state stack up?

The latest Survey of States from the Council of Economic Education showed that just 17 states require students to take a high school course in personal finance(in green on the map below), a number which has remained flat since 2014.  The survey also provides data on economic education, and offer insights from those in business and government on the merits of financial education, as well as what effect a lack of such education may have. For some encouraging news, check out the story from Ryan Leung on page four on how students made a difference in Massachusetts with their program, Project Finance.

Based on the Council's research, indicating "requirements are the main driver of economics and personal finance being taught in schools,"  they offer these simple actions everyone can take, like:
  • Requesting a course in your school or district
  • Calling for more teacher-training
  • Promoting standards and course requirements at the state level.

As an association dedicated to promoting all skills which help create healthy and sustainable individuals, families, and communities, we are highlighting two very specific programs for those interested in healthier financial outcomes for all:

Wellness Wednesday is scheduled for the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. To submit your original content, progress towards an FCSfit goal, or to tell us about someone who exemplifies FCSfit, email fcsfit@aafcs.org.
