Wellness Wednesday:  Conversations Made Easy (or Easier)

Fall is officially here, bringing change in the air and quite possibly new people into our lives -- roommates, colleagues, teachers, etc -- and new opportunities to connect on a real level.

With the average 18-24 year-old sending and receiving more than 100 texts per day, some experts fear that talking to one another is becoming a relic of the past. Yet, most of us would agree that effective communication is the cornerstone to building healthy relationships.

This week as part of our FCSfit Year Three theme, we're sharing 10 basics of good conversation in this TedxTalk from Celeste Headlee, a reporter with nearly 20 years of practice in the art of conversation. Though the tips are simple, they are well-illustrated with examples in her 12-minute Talk

1) Don't multi-task. Be present.
2) Don't pontificate. Enter every conversation as if you something to learn.
3) Use open-ended questions, e.g., instead of saying "Were you scared?" ask, "How did you feel?"
4) Go with the flow.
5) If you don't know, say you don't know.
6) Don't equate your experience with theirs.
7) Try not to repeat yourself.
8) Stay out of the weeds.
9) Listen
10) Be brief.
