Navis Receives AAFCS Undergraduate Scholarship

Alexandria, Va. – August 27, 2018 –
The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) honored its undergraduate scholarship recipient at a ceremony during the recent 109th Annual Conference & Expo in Atlanta, Georgia.  Kennedy Navis, University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menomonie, Wisconsin, received the Jewell L. Taylor Undergraduate Scholarship, which supports one undergraduate student pursuing a degree in family and consumer sciences.

The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) awards undergraduate scholarships to individuals who have exhibited the potential to make contributions to the family and consumer sciences (FCS) field. Individuals who receive an undergraduate scholarship receive financial support for the study of family and consumer sciences and special recognition during the AAFCS Annual Conference & Expo.  Also, recipients of some scholarships receive support toward one year of AAFCS membership and participation in the AAFCS Annual Conference & Expo.

Ms. Navis is majoring in family and consumer sciences education and minoring in Spanish and human development and family studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. She plans to graduate in January 2019, in just 3.5 years from the honors college. Following her graduation, Navis plans to further her education while teaching family and consumer sciences at the secondary level by pursuing a master’s degree in human development and family studies and a doctorate degree. She intends to serve as a post-secondary educator in a family and consumer sciences-related department, and eventually become the program director or chair of the department. Additionally, Navis is an active member within her profession, in her community, and on her college campus. She currently serves as the region one national collegiate representative and co-president of her local chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron, as a Stout ambassador, as the Student Unit president for the Wisconsin Association of Family & Consumer Sciences, and more. Her extensive community service experience includes work with the First Reformed Church, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and YouthWorks.
