Maryland Association of Family & Consumer Sciences Awards Program

Awards are presented at the MAFCS Spring Meeting each year.  

MAFCS Teacher of the Year
One outstanding FCS teacher will be honored.  If the winner meets the guidelines for the AAFCS National Teacher of the Year Award, s/he will apply the following year. The winner will receive a one-year AAFCS/MAFCS membership and AAFCS Conference registration if s/he attends the AAFCS conference. MAFCS Extension Educator of the Year
One outstanding full-time FCS Extension educator will be honored. The winner will receive a one-year AAFCS/MAFCS membership.

MAFCS Post-Secondary Educator of the Year

One outstanding full-time FCS post secondary educator will be honored. The winner will receive a one-year AAFCS/MAFCS membership.

MAFCS Leader Award
One outstanding FCS professional who has made significant contributions to the FCS field. If the winner meets the guidelines for the AAFCS Leader Award, s/he will apply the following year. The winner will receive a one-year AAFCS/MAFCS membership and AAFCS Conference registration if s/he attends the AAFCS conference. MAFCS New Achiever Award
One outstanding FCS professional, who has completed three to eight years of service to the field, will be honored. If the winner meets the guidelines for the AAFCS New Achiever Award, s/he will apply the following year. The winner will receive a one-year AAFCS/MAFCS membership and AAFCS Conference registration if s/he attends the AAFCS conference. MAFCS Outstanding Students
One outstanding student from Morgan State University and one outstanding student from The University of Maryland Eastern Shore are nominated by their professors. Each winner will receive a one-year AAFCS/MAFCS membership.

Mary Faulkner Scholarship
One thousand dollars will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in family and consumer sciences or a related field to continue their education. Undergraduate students must be enrolled for a minimum of nine credits and graduate students for three credits. Students must have a 3.0 GPA. The award will be sent to the educational institution for the summer or fall semester.

Please submit the following for each award: 
Teacher of the Year

  • Describe an exemplary FCS project, unit, etc. that was created by the nominee in an FCS-related content area that has been in place for at least three years; include goals and impact on students, school, and/or community (Maximum 2,000 words)
  • One or two letters of recommendation; one must be from an administrator
  • Supporting artifacts, newspaper articles, or photos as a pdf document (up to 3 pages)

Extension Educator of the Year

  • Describe at least one distinctive program for which the nominee has been a catalyst (maximum 750 words)
  • One or two letters of recommendation
  • Supporting artifacts, newspaper articles, or photos as a pdf document (up to 3 pages)

Post- Secondary Educator of the Year

  • Describe at least one distinctive program for which the nominee has been a catalyst (maximum 750 words)
  • One or two letters of recommendation
  • Supporting artifacts, newspaper articles, or photos as a pdf document (up to 3 pages)

Leader

  • Describe your leadership journey and the difference you have made for individuals, families, or communities (maximum 700 words)
  • One or two letters of recommendation
  • Supporting artifacts, newspaper articles, or photos as a pdf document (up to 3 pages)

New Achiever

  • Describe at least one situation where you made an impact using your FCS skills for individuals, families, or communities (maximum 500 words)
  • One or two letters of recommendation
  • Supporting artifacts, newspaper articles, or photos as a pdf document (up to 2 pages)

Outstanding Student

  • Describe at least one situation where you made an impact or plan to make an impact using your FCS skills for individuals, families, or communities (maximum 300 words)
  • One or two letters of recommendation
  • Supporting artifacts, newspaper articles, or photos as a pdf document (up to 2 pages)

    Mary Faulkner Scholarship

    • Describe your professional goals and financial need (maximum 750 words)
    • One or two letters of recommendation
    • Current college transcript

    Preference given to AAFCS/MAFCS members and those holding AAFCS credentials
