FCS Teacher Bootcamp: Surviving (and Celebrating) the First Years of Teaching (1 PDU)

About the Session:

Surviving the first years of teaching can be challenging, eye-opening, and perhaps a little scary!  Yet, that time can also be exciting and filled with endless learning opportunities.  Designed with new FCS teachers in mind, this session will focus on a range of topics from classroom management to resource management to maintaining work-life balance. 
After this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Find new curricular resources
  • Organize classroom documents
  • Reflect upon classroom management strategies
  • Manage classroom and CTSO budges
  • Discuss best practices for new teachers
  • Achieve overall health and well-being
This “bootcamp” session will provide tips and strategies to help you succeed and make it to year 2 (or year 20)!


About the Presenters:

Carmen Pedersen, M.Ed., CFCS is a fourth-year doctoral candidate and graduate part-time instructor in Family and Consumer Sciences Education at Texas Tech University. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education from the University of Georgia and her master’s in Curriculum and Instruction at Valdosta State University; she has previously taught for 5 ½ years at the secondary level and 2 ½ years at the post-secondary level. She also has experience supervising student teachers and preparing future educators for the classroom. 

Amanda Holland, M.Ed., CFCS is a doctoral candidate at Texas Tech University specializing in the recruitment and retention of Family and Consumer Sciences teachers. Before moving to Texas she attended Appalachian State University and East Carolina University, obtaining both an undergraduate and Master’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. She has teaching experience at both the secondary and post-secondary levels, as well as experience supervising student teachers.
