Dr. Sharon DeVaney, CFCS-Retired, has retired as Editor of the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal (FCSRJ).  Dr. DeVaney, Professor Emeritus as Purdue University, has served as Editor since August of 2009.  In that twelve-year period, she has managed and provided editorial leadership for the publication of 48 issues and a total of approximately 288 articles.  She shared, “I have enjoyed the adventure of being an Editor and I want to thank the authors whose research is what makes a journal evolve and thrive.”  One of her highlights as Editor is the publication of the titles of theses and dissertations completed in family and consumer sciences during the previous year. The list and “the trends in research” articles are published annually in the December issue.  Dr. DeVaney noted another highlight each year has been the selection and recognition of the Best Paper winners.

Her exceptional career and research accomplishments include chairing committees for masters and doctoral students and receiving several awards for research and teaching. She was recognized by the American Council of Consumer Interests as a Distinguished Fellow in 2015 and as a Master Mentor in 2018. Dr. DeVaney was honored as a Legend in Family and Consumer Sciences in 2016 at the AAFCS Annual Conference.  Her community service includes a 6 year term (2017-2023) as a Public Member of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education. The LCME represents the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Association Medical Colleges (AAMC). In retirement, Dr. DeVaney will work as a consultant to graduate programs in family and consumer sciences.

AAFCS appreciates the years of faithful service, dedicated leadership, and editorial guidance that Sharon has provided.  As editor, she has ensured best practices are followed in the review and publication process and has mentored and encouraged emerging scholars and researchers as they navigated the process from submission to publication.  Under her leadership, the FCSRJ has maintained its ethical and research integrity as it published cutting-edge and relevant research in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences.   Best wishes to Dr. DeVaney!
