Alexandria, Va. – August 26, 2020 – The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) honored their 2020 Distinguished Service Award Honorees during the AAFCS Virtual Conference in an online recognition event, Salute to the Stars - Toast of Blue!, held on June 25th with AAFCS staff and conference participants. AAFCS’ Annual Conference was transformed from an in-person conference into a 2-day conference via Zoom this year, which allowed many new attendees from all over the world to participate.

Among those selected for the associations’ most prestigious award was Virginia Vincenti, CFCS, who has a strong record of sustained achievements in AAFCS and the broader profession. Dr. Vincenti has served in 18 AAFCS leadership positions, including AAFCS President in 2003-2004. Following this major service, she continued to contribute to AAFCS by serving as Executive Editor of the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal and as a member of the Nominating Committee and Public Policy Committee, among other activities.

“Throughout her career as an educator and administrator Virginia has inspired others with her keen intellect, comprehensive understanding of
the history and contemporary relevance of family and consumer sciences, and dedicated service to the profession and its various entities.”
- Sharon Y. Nickols, Past President, AAFCS

Dr. Vincenti is held in high esteem both nationally and internationally, especially in her contributions to the history of the field. Beginning with her dissertation and continuing with authorship of articles and book chapters throughout her career, she has raised critical questions and highlighted the contributions of leaders in the field. Most significant is the book she co-edited, Rethinking Home Economics:  Women and the History of a Profession, that provides a perspective on the profession from both home economists and women historians. This and other scholarly works are cited often and used as readings in courses around the world. Her remarkable achievements have earned her a DSA nomination.
