Sullivan Receives National Leader Award

Alexandria, Va. – August 21, 2018
— The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) honored its Leader Award recipients at a ceremony during the 109th Annual Conference & Expo in Atlanta, Georgia on June 26, 2018.  Among those selected for the prestigious award is Deborah Sullivan, PhD, CFCS, director, Campus Wellness, Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio.

Established at the association’s 75th anniversary observance in 1984, the AAFCS Leader Award honors family and consumer sciences professionals who have made significant contributions to the profession through their national leadership in AAFCS.

Not only has Dr. Sullivan demonstrated her dedication to the profession, but she has also proven herself to be a leader in the field and is described by her colleagues as honorable and kind. She currently serves as the director of Ashland University Campus Wellness where she used her family and consumer sciences background to develop a new wellness plan, trains students to provide health and wellness programing to their college peers, oversees countless health and wellness initiatives for the university, and more. Her efforts were recognized when Ashland University was selected as a White House Healthy Campus and she was one of 50 recipients invited to attend the certificate ceremony at the White House. Dr. Sullivan continues to advocate for family and consumer sciences and related occupations in her position and in her collaborative efforts with various professional organizations and the Ohio Department of Education.

Dr. Sullivan has also demonstrated her unwavering commitment to AAFCS, serving in numerous leadership positions at the state and national level, one of which was serving as the Ohio Affiliate president. She is also involved in five other professional organizations related to family and consumer sciences, spends copious amounts of time giving back to her community, juries or solicits numerous publications and presentations of scholarly materials, and more.

Family and consumer sciences (FCS) draws from broad and diverse disciplines to develop and provide content and programs that help individuals become more effective critical thinkers and problem solvers.  Through discovery and delivery of research-based knowledge, FCS professionals help individuals and families develop essential skills to successfully live and work in a complex world. Professionals in the field are uniquely qualified to speak on many critical issues affecting individuals and families, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, wisely managing personal and family finances, and creating supportive relationships with family members, friends, and co-workers.  They are located nationwide in a variety of practice settings, including secondary schools, universities, government agencies, and businesses.
