Nelson Receives National “New Achiever” Award

Alexandria, Va. – August 22, 2018 –
The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) honored its New Achiever Award recipients at a ceremony during the recent 109th Annual Conference & Expo in Atlanta, Georgia.  Among those selected for the prestigious award is Ashley Nelson, National Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), outreach and professional development manager in Reston, Va.

Initiated in 1984, the AAFCS New Achiever Award recognizes emerging professionals who have demonstrated their potential for making significant contributions in family and consumer sciences through their involvement with AAFCS. Award recipients are professionals with three to eight years of service in the field.

In only eight years of membership with AAFCS, Nelson has made worthy contributions to the association. She has participated in Leadership Academy since its inception, has presented multiple times at the Annual Conference & Expo, and is a Leadership Community member. Additionally, she has served in multiple leadership positions within the Minnesota affiliate, has worked to plan and oversee the Minnesota Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Annual Conference, and more.

In Nelson’s current role as FCCLA outreach and professional development manager, she is making strides for the organization at the national level. Her many accomplishments in this role include planning and providing adviser professional development at FCCLA national conferences, working to promote the “Say Yes to FCS” initiative, and implementing new and developing current FCCLA chapters across the country. Nelson further contributes to the field of family and consumer sciences by working heavily with curriculum development through Learning ZoneXpress, KP Education Systems, and Nasco.

Professionals in the field are uniquely qualified to speak on many critical issues affecting individuals and families, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, wisely managing personal and family finances, and creating supportive relationships with family members, friends, and co-workers.  They are located nationwide in a variety of practice settings, including secondary schools, universities, government agencies, and businesses.
