Alexandria, Va. – August 23, 2018
– June Thomas, CFCS-Retired, of Odum, Ga., was honored with the Wiley-Berger Award for Volunteer Service at the recent American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) 109th Annual Conference & Expo in Atlanta, Ga.

Established in 1989, the Wiley-Berger Award for Volunteer Service recognizes commitment to volunteer service and to family and consumer sciences.  The award is given in memory of David R. Wiley, D. Reid, and Agnes Miller Berger, and is an outgrowth of a 1985 award proposal originated by AAFCS’ Home and Community Section.  The award is co-sponsored by the Wiley-Berger Award for Volunteer Service Endowment Fund and AAFCS.

Thomas, a retired family and consumer sciences teacher, has tirelessly volunteered for her community for nearly ten years. Utilizing her family and consumer sciences background, Thomas was instrumental in spearheading the historic preservation of the R.J. Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island in which she and her team worked to repair the outside grounds and interior of the mansion within the Georgia Historic Preservation guidelines. Her commitment to the local, state, regional, and national garden clubs earned her the title of Oleander district director for the 2017-2019 term. In addition to this work, Thomas volunteers with other groups such as Relay for Life, Special Olympics, Day for Wayne, Wayne County Retired Teachers Association, No Ash at All, the Wayne County High School Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Committee, various political campaigns, and more.  She completed nearly 1,500 hours of volunteer work in the past year and continues to generously share her knowledge and wisdom.
