Community Service Award
(May be forwarded for national
competition.)
Purpose:
Individual NYSAFCS members will be recognized for their outstanding effort in a volunteer capacity to improve the public well-being by applying Family & Consumer Sciences member’s knowledge. State recognition is given in even numbered years with the winner submitting his/her application to AAFCS for consideration of the AAFCS Wiley-Berger Award the following year. (The Wiley Berger Award is given in the odd numbered years)

Who may apply:
Current member with a minimum of 5 years NYSAFCS membership.

Due Date:
May 1st


Empire State Apple Award
Purpose:
Honors a living or deceased person who has contributed significantly to the
profession. A donation to NYSAFCS is given by the nominator for the level of the
award.
Bronze Apple $25-$50
Silver Apple $51-$75
Gold Apple- $76 plus
All donations go to the NYSAFCS fellowship fund for continuing education and
professional development.

Who may receive this gift of recognition?

Any NYSAFCS member-living or deceased former member.

Due Date:

Anytime

Friend of the Family Award
(May be forwarded for national competition)

Purpose:
This award honors an outstanding non-member individual or organization who has made
significant contribution(s) affecting the well-being of families. The winner’s application
may be forwarded to AAFCS for consideration of the National Friend of the Family
Award, if appropriate.

Who may be nominated:
Any non-member person or organization who has made a significant contribution to the
well-being of families.

Due Date
: May 1st

New York State Association of Family & Consumer Sciences Leader Award
(May be entered for national competition)

Purpose:

Identifies and honors any Family and Consumer Sciences professional who has made
significant contributions to the profession and the association via their involvement with
AAFCS. This award is presented at the state level and the winner’s application may be
sent to AAFCS for consideration of the AAFCS Leaders Award the following year.

Who may apply:

Any current NYSAFCS member who has more than 8 years of membership.

May 1st

New York State Association of Family & Consumer Sciences New Achiever Award
(May be forwarded for national competition)

Purpose:
This award recognizes and honors any Family & Consumer Sciences professional with
an earned degree in FCS who has demonstrated their potential for achieving significant
accomplishments in or through Family & Consumer Sciences work. This award is
presented at the state level with the winner’s application may be forwarded to AAFCS for
consideration of the AAFCS New Achiever Award the following year—if the award
recipient still meets the AAFCS criteria the following year by having completed no more
than 8 years of professional service.

Who may apply:

Any NYSAFCS member who has earned a FACS degree who has at least 3 years but
not more than 8 years of service to the field. For possible AAFCS recognition the
applicant must not have more than 7 years of service.

Teacher of the Year Award

Purpose:

This award recognizes the outstanding educational programs, methods, techniques &
activities that provide the stimulus for and give visibility to Family & Consumer Sciences
programs. The recipient may be recommended by the NYSAFCS Educators and
selected by the NYSAFCS Board members.

Who may apply:

Candidates must be current members in AAFCS & must have maintained membership
for at least the previous 3 years.

Outstanding Student
Purpose:
Honors an undergraduate or graduate student in Family and Consumer Sciences who is
a student member of AAFCS.

Who may apply:
Candidates must be current undergraduate or graduate student members in AAFCS &
must have maintained membership for at least the previous 3 years.

Due Date:

May 1st

Spotlight Award
Purpose:
To recognize distinguishing activities of a district member(s) related to AAFCS mission. Each district may select awardees annually. The recognition is handled in the district. If there is a NYSAFCS state conference, recognition will also be given during the award ceremony.
Who may be honored:
Any district NYSAFCS member(s).
Due Date:
May 1st


Graduate Fellowship 


This Fellowship Program is available to active members of NYSAFCS, with a minimum of 2 years membership, who need financial assistance to complete advanced degree in any area of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The Fellowship program allows a maximum of $1,500 to be awarded towards an advanced degree or 50% of the expenses incurred (not to exceed $1,000) in pursing Continuing Educational Experience.

Guidelines
Application
