The AAFCS supports the creation and implementation of Family and Consumer Sciences career and technical education programs (also called pathways or clusters) in all States. Family and Consumer Sciences provides students with career-ready skills, life-ready skills, and empowers them to be leaders in whatever occupation they pursue. Every student, no matter their academic ambitions, benefits from attending Family and Consumer Sciences classes.
In States across the U.S., personal finance is now a required or recommend course for all graduating seniors and FCS professionals have taught personal finance since the discipline was first founded in 1890. All students should attend at least one course in personal finance which covers such topics as interest rates, loans, budgeting, debt consolidation, and retirement planning.
Family and Consumer Sciences classes have been available to students since the 1890s when AAFCS was first founded and has a long history as a recognized educational vocation (now called a program, pathway, or cluster). The FCS Alliance details this long history in their publication, Family and Consumer Sciences: Overview of a 100-year-old Industry Sector.
This page captures the benefits and structure of the FCS Career Cluster and we hope will serve as a resource to States who implement FCS into their Career and Technical Education Programs.
