FCS Supports Hospitality and Tourism Careers

FCS FACTS:

  • FCS hospitality and tourism programs include instruction on tourism, foodservice, hotel operations, culinary arts, destination management, revenue management, sales and marketing, hospitality or culinary education, beverage management, vacation ownership, hospitality information systems, and human resource management/training.
  • FCS courses in Hospitality and Tourism prepares students for managerial positions in institutional and commercial foodservice establishments such as retail, hospital, university, senior citizen centers, and public schools. 
  • FCS graduates of hospitality and tourism programs build their own businesses, work with hotels and facilities to coordinate events, catering, and other programming, and give back to their communities.
  • FCS professionals support business and industry through the creation of people-centered events programming. 

About FCS:

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is the people-centered science, focused on the study of individuals, families, and communities with the aim of assisting them to live healthy and successful lives through the provision of education, research, and technology.

FCS professionals in hospitality and tourism work as:

  • Catering Services Managers

  • Event and meeting planners, coordinators, and consultants
  • Event space or venue managers

  • Marketing or communications managers

  • Party planners

  • Program coordinators and managers

  • Hotel managers
  • Chefs in the culinary arts
  • Educators in K-12, post secondary, and community (e.g., cooperative extension) education

How can you help?

  1. Support the inclusion of Family and Consumer Sciences education in K-12 career and technical education.
  2. Support state licensure requirements that include FCS credentialing.
  3. Seek training and education from FCS professionals.
  4. Encourage your learners to attend FCS classes in K-12 and higher education.
  5. Hire hospitality and tourism professionals that have graduated from a recognized FCS college or university program.
  6. Share AAFCS educational materials, informational fliers, and resources with your family, friends, and colleagues.

Fun Ways to Teach Cooking Methods and Food Safety Using Online Videos

Many things have moved online and this has created challenges for teaching food preparation courses and providing food demonstrations. Some instructors have developed their own food preparation videos, while others depend on videos they find online. This ten minute mini session will go through some tips on how to use online videos to properly teach others how to prepare food safely and correctly.  - More here
