Driving Leadership in Food and Nutrition Education

FCS FACTS:

  • FCS professionals support individuals, families, and communities by providing education and resources to help them pursue healthier, more nutrition food options.
  • FCS professionals support the food industry by contributing to the development of accurate and easy to read food labels, testing and researching healthy food alternatives, and development of new food products, and developing outreach and education programs about new food products.
  • FCS professionals support federal, state, and local governments develop food and nutrition policies, disseminate information on food and nutrition programs, alert communities to unhealthy food and safety risks, assist in coordinating outreach. 

About FCS:

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is the people-centered science, focused on the study of individuals, families, and communities with the aim of assisting them to live healthy and successful lives through the provision of education, research, and technology.

FCS professionals work as:

  • Food and nutrition policy experts
  • Chefs in the culinary arts
  • Food science and nutrition experts
  • Food product design engineers
  • Educators in K-12, post secondary, and community (e.g., cooperative extension) education

How can you help?

  1. Support the inclusion of Family and Consumer Sciences education in K-12 career and technical education.
  2. Support state licensure requirements that include FCS credentialing.
  3. Seek training and education from FCS professionals.
  4. Encourage your learners to attend FCS classes in K-12 and higher education.
  5. Hire food and nutrition professionals that have graduated from a recognized FCS college or university program.
  6. Share AAFCS educational materials, informational fliers, and resources with your family, friends, and colleagues.

Can Nutrition Curricula Promote Healthy Aging?

A recent study published in the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal found that participants who attended nutrition education sessions showed improvement in nutrition knowledge of meal planning, interpreting nutrition food labels, and selecting healthy food. - More here
