Alexandria, Va. -- The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) is pleased to announce the 2020-2021 Student Unit Leaders that were sworn in during a virtual installation premiered on the AAFCS Student Unit Facebook page on September 10, 2020: Sadie Hooker of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Chair; Andrew Carter of Georgia Southern University, First Vice Chair; Alyssa Frisby of University of the Central Arkansas, Vice Chair of Service & Outreach; and Kevin Homan, Purdue University, Chair Elect. Landon Calderwood of Iowa State University Extension is Immediate Past Chair and will serve as counselor to the Student Unit.
“The AAFCS Student Unit leaders represent a critical component of our membership," said Sophy Mott, director of affiliate and member programs and staff liaison to the Student Unit. "We are so fortunate to have hundreds of student members from across the nation at dozens of schools, at both the undergraduate and post-graduate level, dedicated to the family and consumer sciences field of study, and to careers which will help others lead an optimal quality of life. Our Student Unit leadership team shines a light on their student perspectives through social media efforts, their Journal column, participation in affiliate and national events, and the annual Student Unit Service Project. Their efforts are critical to sustaining AAFCS as a leader in the field and growing our membership."
Dr. Lori Myers, CFCS, who serves as Interim Executive Director of AAFCS, is a former Student Unit leader herself, and shared this perspective, “Students are the future of AAFCS and the FCS profession! An investment in our students is an investment in the future of FCS. Membership in AAFCS is an important step in one’s FCS professional journey. The decision that I made to join thirty years ago as a college freshman and the opportunities and experiences that I have shared in that time with FCS students and professionals across the country have been instrumental in my career success.
